Double Standards

Out of boredom, I started going through the intimate section of F My Life. Shhh.

Prawnkus v.2

Prawnkus v.2

I had to redo the drawing  because the other was too large. Since you can’t pan the view in Alchemy, I couldn’t continue working on it.  I started from scratch, using a silhouette of the character this alien replaces for sizing. You need to view this in full size, having it resized doesn’t make it look very good. The head is much more cleaner and tighter, although Alchemy doesn’t seem to be about that.

I suppose it’s amusing that I created a plugin that integrated a drawing tool into wordpress, and yet I’m still drawing and uploading images from my computer. If Alchemy can be run from a website like Chibipaint, then I would’ve expanded the plugin to incorporate it. Alchemy is made with Java and it is open source, so it might be possible.

Prawnkus in Alchemy

Prawnkus

Done in Alchemy, I was doing this for a school assignment as well. It’s not the perfect recreation, but that’s sort of the point of Alchemy. It’s meant to be gritty. I used Scrawl shape with mirror and a bit of smoothing.

You can find a copy of Alchemy here. It’s a lot of fun and there are videos that show you how they used it. Mostly it seems best for character design. Alchemy, from what I can see, works on the psychological concept that we make up what we see in noise (Rorschach inkblot test). You look at clouds and you find a rabbit, a star, a car, etc. Alchemy works very much the same way, except you have more control over the cloud and you can refine it. It’s really an excellent method of sketching in my mind. Although I have a tendancy of refining it a bit too much at times.

District 9

There was an article on how the Nigerian Information Minister had taken offence to the way Nigerians were being portrayed in the movie. At the end of the article, the actor who portrayed the gang leader in the movie pretty much ridiculed the Information Minister’s reaction. The article also mentioned how the Information Minister seem to allow rebranding of the Nigerians through the depiction of the criminal characters in the movie. Ultimately, that looks a lot like an over-reaction. Attempting to be absolute in how a certain group of people are portrayed is also attempting to hide the fact of human nature. We are violent, greedy, and selfish. It really doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside, we’ve all got the same instinct on a primal level.

This post isn’t to discuss the over-reaction of an Information Minister, it’s to gush about how much District 9 ended up teaching me about human psychology, visual graphics and generally what made the movie one of my favourite movies of all time. I’m also going to say here that it’s truly worth watching Director’s commentary on movies, it gives a lot of insight to questions you may have about the movie. I get that movies shouldn’t need to be explained in order for their messages to be spread and frankly, I find that the message that’s being spread by the director, Neill Blomkamp is pretty clear to me.

The Girl

So I finally finished the first serious I made with the Chibipaint plugin I wrote. I find I like doing stuff in black and white, to be honest…but here it is in colour anyway.

Testing the Plugin!

So I’m testing the plugin, or showing that it works to the world. Anyway, it does and I had no complaints from my plugin so far. Excellent!

This is not the extent of my illustration abilities, I’m just doing a quick test of my plugin.

If you want a copy of the plugin (or find out what it’s really about), click here. It’s in beta, so if you find any bugs, please let me know.

Chibipaint for Wordpress Alpha

So I’ve finally got the plugin finished. It was quite an uphill climb, mostly to try and integrate the plugin like the one for the Shi-Painter.

It is not 6 AM anymore and I’ll talk more about it now. The official page for it won’t be in this blog. This was meant to be a sketchbook of sorts. The official page will be in the root of this website.

The only thing left to do is to add the nonce bits (it’s a security feature) and split it up so it isn’t in a 400 line file.

Yeah, it got that big.

D’oh!

After I got my plugin about 80% completed, I found out someone else had already gone and did something like this. Let’s just saying I’m not terribly happy, but they’re using a different plugin, which doesn’t seem to want to work with my tablet. Yes, I’m sure my tablet is in fact, working. I rather not mess around with an outdated software like Oekaki Shi-Painter, so I’m sticking with ChibiPaint. Now, the other plugin did two things better than my own. First, they created a media upload tab (you click on the add image when you’re in add new post/edit post). Second, the upload method doesn’t seem to give me trouble when trying to save to my windows test server. It’s one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?!” moment and it isn’t the greatest feeling after staying up late trying to get the initial draft through.

Of course, it didn’t help that there were no actual planning involved beyond the purpose of the plugin. This means a total rewrite of the system. A skeleton plan has been drafted, functions will be written in an orderly fashion! Inline documentations will be written at the same time! Let’s see if I can get this script smaller. It would be nice of wordpress has some documentation on hooks like media_upload_tabs and the likes.

More updates on that when more progress is made.

Softwares I’ve Found

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I’ve came back with a bit of a haul.

On Monday, my decision to change the way I take notes have been made solid. I now use Freemind/MindNode to take notes. It’s way easier and I don’t have to sort through a bunch of notes I’ve taken just to find what I want. I’m pretty ecstatic about this new way of taking notes for myself. Maybe I’ll start going through them more often! Here’s hoping…

My boyfriend decided to start messing around with virtualization…and wanted a blast from the past, I suppose. He installed VirtualBox and had Windows 3.1(1) installed, then Windows 95 (didn’t work out so well) and then 98. Eventually, I told him to try Ubuntu and he did…which then got me wanting to do the same. I installed Virtualbox and Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to give Ubuntu One a try. It worked, it was cool and I shared a folder with my boyfriend, which also worked. Then I went on a bit of a downloading spree and found a few things (that worked for Windows as well). I actually rediscovered Drawpile, which I can’t tell if it works or not until I get it compiled for Windows…or get hamachi working for Linux. I also discovered MyPaint, which is the sweetest illustration/digital painting software I’ve come across. Apparently the open movie project, “Durian” is using this software for their artwork. For those who don’t know, that’s a big deal in the open source “scene.” I tried it out and I personally think it rivals openCanvas easily. Not to mention that it’s open source and free of charge.

Besides the stuff that you need to download, I found a java applet for drawing right on websites called ChibiPaint. It provides some idea as to how to interact between the java applet and php. I’ll be trying to turn this into a wordpress plugin soon, so stick around.

Hopefully after the applet’s installed, you’ll see more posts on this site.

Getting to the Root

I’ve been playing MMORPGs lately…and started browsing a site called AlternativeTo. First off I’ll talk about the site. AlternativeTo will take whatever software you search for and offer alternatives to that software. It isn’t some automatic recognition system, so the suggestions are based on human opinions (based on how they tag the software too, I believe). Still, it’s pretty neat and I’ve found a few interesting software from it…mostly for my Mac though. Now that part of the post is done, the next part! I’ve discovered a program called Mudlet. It’s just a MUD client and I’m not entirely sure what about it sets it apart from the other MUD clients out there, but it was the only one I found on AlternativeTo. For some reason I felt compelled to try it out, so away I go!

I just hope my keyboard’s fixed so it doesn’t try to spam my messages again like last time. I wonder if there’s a way of turning off the last message typed showing up in the input text box…just in case my enter key decides to stick again.
